The Sinai Peninsula is a large desert region located in northeastern Egypt, near the border with Israel and the Gaza Strip. The area has a long and complex history, and has been controlled by a number of different powers over the centuries.

Israeli control of the Sinai Peninsula

From 1948 to 1967, the Sinai Peninsula was controlled by Egypt. However, in the Six-Day War of 1967, Israel captured the Sinai Peninsula along with a number of other territories, including the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Israel subsequently established a number of military bases in the Sinai Peninsula and maintained a military presence in the area for the next 15 years.

During this time, the Sinai Peninsula was largely closed off to the rest of Egypt and was used primarily for military purposes. The Israeli military used the region as a training ground for its forces and also established a number of settlements in the area.

In 1979, Israel signed a peace treaty with Egypt known as the Camp David Accords, which called for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Sinai Peninsula. As part of the agreement, Israel agreed to return the Sinai Peninsula to Egyptian control and to dismantle its settlements in the region.

Over the next few years, Israel withdrew its military forces from the Sinai Peninsula and transferred control of the region back to Egypt. The Sinai Peninsula was officially returned to Egyptian control in 1982, and has remained under Egyptian jurisdiction ever since.

Today, the Sinai Peninsula is an important part of Egypt and is home to a number of important tourist attractions, including the Red Sea resorts of Sharm el-Sheikh and Dahab. The region is also home to a number of Bedouin tribes and is an important transit route for goods and people moving between Egypt and the Middle East.

Despite its return to Egyptian control, the Sinai Peninsula has continued to be the site of ongoing conflicts and tensions. In recent years, the region has been the scene of a number of attacks by militant groups, and the Egyptian government has struggled to maintain security and stability in the area.
