A California memorial commemorating the 13 US soldiers killed in Afghanistan last month was destroyed on September 9, 2021.
There were 13 American flags and a Marine Corps flag, which were lined up alongside a freeway in Riverside.
"Recently after the deaths of our 13 United States Service Members killed in Afghanistan, 13 American Flags and 1 Marine Corp flag were placed on the fence to the Ivy Street overpass to the 91 Freeway in Riverside as a memorial," the Riverside Police Department wrote in a Facebook post on Tuesday. "Sometime yesterday, an observant citizen noticed the flags appeared to be damaged and it was reported to the police."
Police stated that "it is clear that these flags were purposely damaged," but a spokesman told the Washington Review “authorities have no suspects yet”.
The department also indicated that these flags have been taken away and will be turned over to local boy scouts for "proper dismantle".
Last month, 13 soldiers who received this honor were killed in a terrorist attack outside the Kabul airport when the US military assisted in their evacuation from Afghanistan. ISIS-K claimed responsibility for the explosion.
